‘Affluent commuter towns like Ascot and Wilmslow are classic affair hotspots,’ said relationship expert Jessica Leoni.

‘These places are hubs for high-flying careers, long commutes, and significant stress – affairs can become a form of release or a way to reclaim your identity, so it’s no surprise these places are buzzing with passion.’

In second place, meanwhile, was Cheshire ‘footballer belt’ favourite Wilmslow, with 6.23 per cent reporting affairs, followed by quiet Alness, in the Scottish Highlands at 6.01 per cent.

However, it’s good news for couples in Essex, as the county had the top two most faithful towns – Clacton-on-Sea and Harlow, where only 0.31 per cent and 0.42 per cent had affairs.

Speaking about Clacton-on-Sea’s low infidelity rate, Jessica added: ‘It seems residents of the seaside town are remaining remarkably faithful.

‘Perhaps the political drama on their doorstep is providing enough excitement for everyone, leaving no reason to stray from their partners.’

Other true and trusted hotspots included Hartlepool, County Durham (0.49 per cent), Alloa, Clackmannanshire (0.57 per cent), Wigan, Greater Manchester (0.58 per cent) and Washington, Tyne and Wear (0.58 per cent).

Next was Swindon, Wiltshire (0.60 per cent), Bournemouth, Dorset (0.61 per cent), Gateshead, Tyne and Wear (0.62 per cent) and Paignton, Devon (0.63 per cent).

The results come from the 2025 Infidelity Index by IllicitEncounters.com, an affairs site.

This year’s data also reveals a 6 per cent rise in affairs across the UK since January, continuing a two-decade trend of growing extramarital activity.

While it didn’t make the list in 2025, last year it was another popular races destination that looked to get hearts pulsing – Cheltenham.

And since the release of Jilly Cooper’s bonkbuster TV adaptation on Disney+, Rivals, sign-ups for the site across the Cotswolds had risen by a whopping 47 per cent, in what is being called ‘the Rivals effect’.

Meanwhile, earlier in 2024, researchers claimed that when women are unfaithful, it is because they want ‘good genes’ for their offspring, known as ‘dual-mating theory’.

Women reportedly tend to seek out attractive affair partners for their genetic material, but stay with a long-term mate who would make a better parent.

However, some participants reported straying out of boredom or a lack of investment from their current partner, saying they simply wanted to have their cake and eat it too.

The study was conducted by Australian and UK researchers who surveyed 254 heterosexual people, 116 of whom were women, and asked them to measure their physical, personal and parental attraction to both partners.

Participants were asked to rank the physical attraction stating: ‘He was very sexy looking’; ‘I didn’t like the way he looked’, or ‘He was somewhat ugly’, among others.

Questions about their parental attraction to their affair partner included: ‘I thought he had good fatherly qualities’; ‘I thought one could depend on him to care for a child’, and ‘I believed men like him made bad fathers’.
