Stefanie embarked on her career in law enforcement nine years ago, and in that time happened to find the perfect formula for posting social media content about her professional life in a male-dominated field and the much “girly” life — one in which which she rocks smokey eyes and glams up in “fun, bright” and even sheer outfits — she leads off-duty.

“I didn’t want anyone to know that I was a police officer (on my social channels), but then I was like, maybe I can help people if they want to get into a career (in the force),” she tells PEOPLE. Since a

titled “Night Shift Police Officer Routine” took off with over 500,000 views, Stefanie, a former Sephora employee, has been redefining what it looks like to be a woman in the field.

Today, Stefanie is a daytime patrol officer, a role she’s “content” with after working night shifts for three years. “Every shift is so different,” she explains of her current position. “But they usually (entail) traffic stops, traffic enforcement. If we encounter anyone that’s on the street that has a warrant, we’ll get that taken care of. We do a lot of property checks for homes, buildings or businesses just to make sure nothing’s broken into. A lot of community policing as well, where we go to schools and interact with the community.”

Because she works in an agency that requires a conservative appearance (that means no brightly colored makeup or polish), Stefanie maintains a “traditional” appearance with natural-looking makeup and her hair slicked back in a bun. (According to New York Statethose employed by the Division of State Police must have “neatly groomed hair” that doesn’t interfere with uniform headgear.)

That means when she gets ready before her shift, she does a “five-minute face” that is workplace-appropriate. Glowing skin and hydrated lips are what matter most, so she focuses on a good skincare routine, a solid foundation achieved with a tinted SPF, and a lip combo typically done with a stain topped with a gloss or balm. She also uses a hint of blush and mascara.

Touch-ups are surprisingly easy when she’s on the clock. Some of her lip products and a bottle of SPF get stashed in her duty bag (or what one of Stefanie’s colleagues jokes is her “beauty parlor”) while a tinted lip balm gets tucked into a pocket in her vest.

It’s not surprising to Stefanie that she gets misjudged often. “If I had a penny for every time someone said, ‘Oh my God, I can’t picture you as a cop,’ I would be a millionaire. Because outside of work, I’m totally different in what I look like and dress like.”

But redefining what it looks like to be a woman in the police force has been the most rewarding part about her journey. “Meeting all of the sweet young girls or girls that are my age that are just like, “You’ve helped me so much,’ that’s all I ever wanted to do, was to just show that you can still be girly in a male-dominated (industry),” says Stefanie, who remembers what impact having a female sergeant had on her confidence.

“I always tell anyone that has any questions about getting into this career is…if this is your dream, please don’t ever give up. Continue to go for it. You may not fit the mold, but who honestly cares about that? Just be yourself and go after any dream that you see yourself in.”
