A hotel employee is recalling one of the “worst” experiences he’s had working overnight at the front desk.
In a Nov. 18 post on the Reddit forum r/TalesFromTheFrontDeskthe worker detailed a traumatizing and unexpected interaction with a guest. “I get a call from a room at 2:30 (a.m.) asking for a manager,” the Original Poster (OP) wrote. “As I’m the only one here, I guess that’s me.”
According to OP, the guest was claiming there was a mouse in their room and that they “didn’t feel safe.”
“My eyes roll so far back I can see my skull,” the employee recalls. “I offer to move them to a room down the hall. (The guest) declines but then asks (again), ‘When will management be here?’”

At that point, the employee says he suspected the guest was lying. He questioned why they would turn down another room if they didn’t “feel safe” in the first one. The call eventually ended and the employee wrote a note for the general manager to look into the situation in the morning.
The next day, the OP says, the guests checked out around 6 a.m., ending their three-night stay. About two hours later, the general manager came in and they went up to investigate the room.
“There is a dead (white) mouse near the bay window in the room with its neck snapped and there is a tiny pool of water around it,” the OP recounts of the scene the manager allegedly discovered.
The manager then called their sanitation person to dispose of the critter.
“Guy shows up (and) takes one look at the mouse and tells us that this particular type of mouse is not native to this area and was purchased at a local pet store that sells them as food,” the OP claims.
Then it clicked for the employee, he says: “Y’all these people purchased a mouse, brought it in here, drowned it and then snapped its neck. They murdered a mouse.”
According to the poster, the manager then refunded all three nights back to the guests — totaling over $1,000. He later placed them on a “Do Not Rent” list because he was afraid of a bad review.
“Something about these people just chapped my a– in a way it hasn’t been chapped before,” the employee wrote.
In the comments, readers hypothesized that the mouse’s death may have occurred under other circumstances.
“You can buy those dead and frozen,” someone put it simply. “That would explain the water.”

Others were confused as to why the guests received a refund at all.
“I can’t imagine why your (general manager) comped them $1,000 when they obviously committed fraud!” another commenter alleged.
They added: “He’s afraid of a bad review when the hotel could clearly rebut it with facts about the type of mouse that was found AND that the guests refused to move rooms when they were staying three days!?! They sure were scared, weren’t they?”
