Those of you who enjoy a bit of celebrity watching may have noticed the seismic change that’s occurred on the red carpet and on the front row this autumn: the 0.1 per cent are all wearing white.

I don’t want to say ‘white is the new black’, but for now it’s definitely the chicer, bolder, lovelier choice.

For the premiere of her new Netflix documentary series, Victoria Beckham wore a white long skirt suit. When Meghan Markle made her surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week on the Balenciaga front row, she was wearing all white — a heavy silk shirt and trousers under a flowing over size scarf. Later she changed into a one shoulder black dress which, in comparison, seemed a bit old hat.

Lauren Sanchez also wore white during Paris Fashion Week; Kate Moss attended the opening night of the film, Moss & Freud, about her relationship with artist Lucian Freud in a sharp white trouser suit — with nothing underneath.

Two remarkable things to note about this all white October: a) it’s the season of warm tones and black and b) this is not a daring look for the young and adventurous — all these women are over forty. They get dressed to make themselves stand out, look fashionable, younger and fresher.

And it’s true that when the new designer at Balenciaga went in for a fashion hug with Meghaneven fashion onlookers winced: the merest smudge of hair oil, the tiniest fleck of sweat on that pure outfit and it would all have been over.

Still, it’s perfectly possible to wear white if you’re a civilian on a budget, and it’s worth it. Here are a few tips…

Meghan Markle wearing all white for her surprise appearance at Paris Fashion Week

Zara’s whiteish faux fur coat

Don’t wear one shade of white

All the shades all the way to honey and back to stone, all worn together, is the answer for civilians in search of a yummy mummy creamy winter look. Not only does mixing up shades of white add interest and prevent you from looking like a holy figure —Meghan’s outfit did have a touch of the seers about it — it’s much easier to keep pristine. Shove the cotton trousers in a 30 degree wash; no need to clean the rest.

Don’t wear whites head to toe

Observe the two out of three rule and it automatically becomes more accessible. So, a white coat and trousers with a different top (could be chocolate brown, could be navy with a cream stripe or the reverse); a white coat and a white sweater with tailored blue jeans or an A-line lightweight brown suedette midi skirt (something that’s catching on for autumn, take a look at Marks & Spencer’s – £45, marksandspencer.com).

Note: a white collar and cuffs, just showing under a creamish sweater is very fresh and face illuminating in winter, and not as hard as a plain white shirt on its own.

Think loose and luxey

What’s all important when wearing white this autumn is that the cut is loose fit and slouchy, not tight and clingy, and the fabric is winter friendly, so not lace or linen. (That will look cold or suggest you’ve been raiding your holiday wardrobe.)

Forget white after dark

Smart separates are your best bet — easy for day, and just add a touch to dress them up in the evening.

Start with some good wide-leg, snug-on-the-hips white jeans (£99, mintvelvet.com) or trousers. I like Sezane’s in ecru velvet needlecord (£135, sezane.com). Add a smart sweater like M&S’s cream funnel neck (£46) and wear a brown suede jacket or coat on top for that two thirds white look.

For evening, swap the top for a textured fluffy crew neck in ‘light natural’, currently M&S’s number one bestseller in knitwear (£26), or a scarf tie ivory silk blouse, to knot, rather than tie, in a fat bow (£119, stories.com). Wear with ivory trousers under a black coat or with an ivory coat with black or brown trousers or a brown midi skirt. So many options.

Get a statement coat

Zara has a great selection of whiteish faux furs at the moment including a shaggy ecru chubby (£109, zara.com) that will instantly glamour up any trousers or denim. White fur looks much better in the day than dark colours, and lightens up black in the evening, making it more fun and less severe. Plus a white coat is high impact yet low risk in terms of maintenance.
